Purbeck Island Discs
Nick Wells runs Replayed Records in Swanage with his wife Dawn, A Bowie fan for many years so we asked him to select only his favourite tunes for a Desert Island Compilation.
Hang on to yourself
I picked this as my first choice as it was the first song that I heard David Bowie perform live when I saw him on the 1972/73 Ziggy Stardust/Aladdin Sane tour. Imprinted in my memory forever!
I can remember hearing this for the first time on Radio 1 in 1973 while driving my Mk1 Ford Escort and having to pull over at the opening riff. For me one of the most recognisable intro’s ever and never fails to make me smile when I hear it.
White Light / White Heat
One of the very, very few times I can honestly say I prefer a cover to the original. As much as I enjoy The Velvet Underground original, somehow for me, Bowie pulls something else out of this track. (Maybe having seen him perform this live with Mick Ronson’s magnificent guitar work has biased me more than a little!)
Always Crashing in the Same Car
At a time when his personal lifestyle was at a particularly low point, he somehow produced for me one of his best albums “Low”, the first of the “BerlinTrilogy”. I have just picked my favourite track.
From the tenth studio album Station To Station which saw him emerge beyond the Ziggy Stardust & Aladdin Sane personnas as his last character ” The Thin White Duke”. A truly transitional album for Bowie, developing the funk and soul music of his previous release, Young Americans (not a favourite) while presenting a new direction towards synthesisers and Motorik Kraut Rock style rhythms, influenced by German electronic bands such as Kraftwerk and Neu!. Probably one of the least played tracks over the years but I love the funk feeling and Carlos Alomar’s guitar sound is tremedous!
Pretty sure this will be the “Marmite” track in the list. From the “Outside” album which I rarely hear anybody talk about (many times not even know about) I just like the track and that’s why we all play music anyway after all!
The Next Day
Ten years away and the man sneaks a new album up on us without us ever knowing. I am not sure I can think of any artist who could be away for 10 years and produce something of this quality. I could have picked virtually any song so I just decided to pick the title track ( plus I have it on gimmicky 7″ square white vinyl too!)
I started the list with the first song I ever heard David Bowie play live, so it seemed obvious I should end the list with the last song I have heard him perform live (so far!!). That was at Wembley Arena on the 2003 Reality tour, it’s just a such an iconic song too and had to be on the list anyway.
My luxury item would have to be a solar powered hi-fi with a WHUFC slipmat!
We thank Nick Wells for his Purbeck Island Discs.
